Hoover City Schools Manager named School Nutrition Hero

The national, non-profit School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) has recognized Elizabeth Whidden, the Child Nutrition Program Manager at Hoover City Schools (AL), as one of five 2017 School Nutrition Heroes.

The Heroes are nominated by peers and chosen by SNF to represent the many professionals who have dedicated their lives to serving the needs of school children and the community.

Liz began her career in child nutrition in 2011 and was quickly promoted to Child Nutrition Manager thanks to her efforts to create a positive and healthy environment for staff members and children alike. Dedicated to her students, Liz has held a perfect work attendance for the past three years and has earned a perfect Health Inspection Score for her cafeteria.

“Liz has the persona, heart and work ethic of a school nutrition hero. The students can always count on Mrs. Liz to greet them in the cafeteria, making everyone feel welcome in her dining room and putting a smile on their face,” said Melinda Bonner, Director of Child Nutrition at Hoover City School district.

In her role, she encourages healthy choices through decorated bulletin boards, and works closely with Hoover City Schools’ student gardens. Donating seeds from her mercantile store, Liz also promotes healthy and locally sourced options for the greater community. Through that store, she is dedicated to serving the homeless and those in need, donating hygiene kits and basic supplies. She is often seen seeking out those on the streets who might benefit from her help.

“Liz is a perfect example of what we look for in a School Nutrition Hero,” said School Nutrition Association CEO Patti Montague, CAE. “Her work with the many members in need in her community is just one way she continues to make an impact on her town and those who live there.”

All of the 2017 School Nutrition Heroes will be recognized at SNF’s Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes, during School Nutrition Association’s 45th Legislative Action Conference in Washington, DC in April. The annual Celebration is SNF’s signature and sole fundraising event to support the Foundation’s education, research and scholarships for school nutrition professionals.
